We get it. What you bookmark is personal. That's why AF Stars uses end-to-end encryption to ensure that your data stays yours — and only yours.
Your bookmarks, tags, and custom search engine configurations are encrypted on your device before they leave your browser. We store only encrypted data on our servers. Without your password, the data is unreadable — even to us.
When you sign up, AF Stars generates a unique encryption key. This key is encrypted with your password using PBKDF2 (10,000 iterations) and stored in your profile. Every time you log in, your password unlocks your key, and your data is decrypted locally in your browser. At no point does your key or unencrypted data touch our servers.
All sensitive user-generated content: - Bookmark URLs - Bookmark titles and tags - Custom search engine names and URLs Actor names and public data (like fav counts) are not encrypted, as they're public information.
In the unlikely event of a database breach, attackers would see only encrypted ciphertext. Without your password, the data is meaningless. This is the same level of security used by encrypted messaging apps like Signal.
True privacy comes with responsibility. If you forget your password, we cannot recover your encrypted data. There is no backdoor, no master key, no reset option for encrypted content. We recommend using a password manager.
AF Stars doesn't track you. We don't use analytics, advertising cookies, or third-party trackers. Combined with end-to-end encryption, AF Stars is the most private way to manage your bookmarks in this space.
